PEACE AND SAFETY

The Day of the Lord – Peace & Safety Cry

There is much speculation about the ‘peace and safety’ cry which precedes the coming of Jesus.

The phrase comes from 1 Thess. 5:3 and the context is to be ready and not caught off guard.

Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they know very well what the day of the Lord will be like. Presumably he is reminding them of Jesus own words about it in the gospels. It’s interesting to compare Jesus words with Paul’s comments –

JESUS – Matt. 24 PAUL – 1 Thess. 5
As lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man you know very well that the day of the Lord
Understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.  So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. will come like a thief in the night.
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. While people are saying, Peace and safety, destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

There are so many thought similarities between these 2 passages (compare the colours) that it would appear to be the context of the ‘peace and safety’ cry.  It’s not actually a ‘cry’ – it’s what people are saying by their actions – a summary of  ‘eating drinking, marrying and giving in marriage’.

Jesus and Paul both give us a message  not to be caught off guard as the world in general will be – just as they were in the days of Noah. They were living the ‘peace and safety’ life with no care for the future until the flood came as sudden destruction and swept them all away like a thief entering a house where the owner is asleep.
