FLOOD – 7 Reasons It Wasn’t Global

1.  NEPHILIM ON THE EARTH BEFORE & AFTER THE FLOOD

Gen.  6:4    Nephilim (fallen ones) before the Flood.

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days.”

Gen. 7:21   All creatures other than Noah and his clan were annihilated by the Flood.

Num. 13:33   There were Nephilim after the Flood.

Num. 13:33 “There we saw the Nephilim, Sons of Anak, of the Nephilim”

Genesis 7:21 tells us that all creatures (other than those on the ark) were destroyed by the flood, yet there were Nephilim on the earth before and after the flood of the same family – this could only fit if the Nephilim were outside the flood zone, thus the flood was local.

SPECIFIC LINES OF GIANTS

Rephaim is a term for giants in general. But there were at least 3 specific lines of giants

There were –

1. Nephilim – Sons of Anak descended from Arba, who lived at KiriathARBA  (later called Hebron)

Num. 13:33 “There we saw the Nephilim, Sons of Anak, of the Nephilim”

Josh. 15:13 – “Kiriath-Arba, that is Hebron. Arba was the forefather Of Anak.”     Josh. 15:13

2. Zamzummin – Dwelt in the border of Ammonites

That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim (Giants), who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites. Deut. 2:20-21

3. Emim – lived in land of Moabites

Deuteronomy 2:10 compares the height of the Emim giants to the height of the sons of Anak (Nephilim) showing that they are different lines. Thus the reasoning that there were giants of no particular line before the flood and giants of no particular line after the flood, can’t be used to dismiss the evidence of a specific line of giants – Nephilim – descended from Arba, who were not wiped out by the flood.

The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites (Nephilim). Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim (Giants), though the Moabites called them Emites. Deut. 2:10-11

So when we are told that there were Nephilim before and after the flood, it means the flood did not wipe them out because it was local. It was in the area North and East of Canaan – the ark coming to rest on the Mountains of Ararat. Thus Ezekiel says that Canaan had not been rained on during the wrath of the flood –

Ezek. 22:24: “Say to the land (Israel), ‘You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.” (flood)

2. GLOBAL FLOOD CONTRADICTS CREATION ACCOUNT IN PSALMS

Ps. 104:5-9 He set the earth on its foundations, never to be moved. You covered it with the deep like a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke the waters fled; at the sound of Your thunder they hurried away— the mountains rose and the valleys sank to the place You assigned for them – You set a boundary they cannot cross, that they may never again cover the earth.

3. LACK OF GEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE

4. The WHOLE EARTH often doesn’t mean the entire planet

whole earth

5. GOD IS JUST

God is Just – He warns before He destroys. Only the ones Noah Preached to died.

6. PROBLEMS WITH GLOBAL FLOOD INTERPRETATION

The many different races of people throughout the world could not just be descended  from Noah’s family.

A continuous history of different races  on the planet  (like Australian Aborigines, Chinese etc) scientifically pre-date the flood.

How could animals like Koalas get from the Mountains of Ararat to Australia?

7. MUSICAL ANCESTORS

The record in Genesis 4 concerning the ancestors of those who made musical instruments etc. makes no sense if they were all wiped out in the flood –

Gen. 4:17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Me-hu′ja-el, and Me-hu′ja-el the father of Me-thu′sha-el, and Me-thu′sha-el the father of Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Na′amah.

Interesting pre-flood musical instrument decorations below – (flood approx 2400 BC), There are many surviving artefacts which don’t appear to have been through a worldwide flood, and  pre-date it –

  1. Hank says:

The antediluvian existence of that era was out of control. My best place for comprehension of late has been THE BOOK OF LAMECH OF CAIN AND LEVIATHAN. Totally insightful.

  2. Brian Hurn says:

There were no Anakim before the flood. Anakim were descendants of Anak, post flood.

    • alsowritten says:

The Anakim were of the Nephilim, not just giants but a specific line of giants who were on the earth before and after the flood. Compare Gen. 6:4 and Numbers 13:33

      • Brian Hurn says:

        Nephilim just means bully/ giant.
        It’s not a family name.
Gigantism is a genetic or medical condition. There are various causes.

      • alsowritten says:

There were separate lines of giants.. Anak was descended from Arber (Hebron used to be called KirathARBER). Deuteronomy 2 describes different lines in two places – Deut 2:10 – “10 The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. 11Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites.” Deut. 2:20-21 also talks about another line of giants as tall as those of the Anak line but separate – “That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim (giants), who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. ” Rephaim means ‘giant’.

      • Brian Hurn says:

Gen 10 indicates all people of the post flood world descended from Noah’s 3 sons, including the Canaanites & Amorites V15-16, etc.
Eg the giant Og King of Bashan was an Ammorite, as were the Zamzummim; Emim, etc were Canaanites. All branches of the same group.
In Num 13:33 ‘Nephilim’ is given to Canaanite giants, “the sons of Anak.” They were Cushites & Goliath the Philistine came from them.
As 1 commentary says ,”It is likely that the term Nephilim refers generally to “giants” (see HALOT 709 s.v. נְפִילִים) without implying any ethnic connection between the antediluvian and postdiluvian varieties.”
In Num 13 the Greek version uses gigantes (“giants”) to translate “the Nephilim,” but it does not retain the clause “the sons of Anak are from the Nephilim”.

Thanks for you comments. Have modified article to explain my points better. I disagree with the commentary you quote. I will go with the Masoretic text which links the Nephilim to the sons of Anak . It is evident from Deut. 2 that the Nephilim/Anakim were not just ‘giants’ but a specific line and distinct from the Zamzummin and Emim lines of giants. As I state in point 6, modern science shows that groups like the Chinese and Australian Aborigines can’t all be descended from the sons of Noah. I see Eden also as a mix of parable and literal. As I state in point 4, the ‘whole earth’ doesn’t always mean the ‘whole planet’ – thus Gen. 10 describing the people who spread over the earth talks of the earth in that area – they spread around the middle east region described in Gen. 10 as covering Turkey, Canaan, Egypt etc. Not China Australia etc. (not the whole ‘cosmos’).

For me it’s still a universal flood.
    1. Nephilim were simply giants/tall people. Anak was after the flood & there’s no reason to connect the two groups.
    2. Says the opposite of what you want, that they may never again cover the earth.”
    3. There is HEAPS of geological evidence for the cataclysm – how to do preserve huge dinosaurs without burying them rapidly? Accepting majority dating methods make lead you astray. Noah built the largest wooden boat in history. He built the latest boat ever until 1858 when iron ships exceeded them.
    4. True.
    5. Not true, every day.
    6. God miraculously brought the animals to Noah so it seems reasonable that God redistributed the animals – this explains WHY you only find those animals in those countries.
All the races easily descended from Noah (& from Adam & Eve).
    7. You’re forgetting that the antediluvian civilisation lasted many centuries before the flood – even though we only have a few summary verses.
So, I don’t think you’re objections suggest a local flood. There are huge problems for the local flood idea eg why did Noah build a huge ship to take his ducks & geese when he could have moved away? How did a local flood last a year without running away? God promised no repeats – year there are many floods every year…For me it’s still a universal flood.
