REVELATION – An Overview

In Revelation each aspect of mankind is measured and judged according to their deeds. It is the ‘Writing on the Wall’ for all the Kingdoms of Men.

Each  judgement concludes with the time of the end –

Rev 2-3 Churches are told of judgement – eg. “To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”

Rev 6:17

“The great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

11:15         “The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

The seventh angel poured out his bowl …a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” … the cities of the nations collapsed.

For our Lord

God Almighty reigns.”

There are warnings preceding each judgement. The Jews living in Jerusalem around AD 70 and AD 135 could have could have fled knowing they were the times of judgement described in Lev 26 and referred to in Revelation 6 (See ‘Revelation – The Time is at Hand’)

Those perceiving ‘the time is at hand’ – are called ‘blessed’ when they attend to it

“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and attend to what is written in it because the time is near.” Rev 1:3

The same message to deliver as John the Baptist

Matt 3:2 “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Rev 1:3 “For  the time is at hand”

In our day, Revelation is a call to action to proclaim  the coming of Lord and urge people to repent.

There are many layers to Revelation. One aspect is a focus on tabernacle worship -26% of Biblical references to ‘Lamb’ occur in Revelation – Jesus was the passover lamb, the Messiah the Jews rejected,  Revelation is making this clear. In Revelation the tabernacle symbology is shown to be pointing to far greater things.  The passover lamb was Jesus, the incense offerings were the prayers of the saints, the priests and congregation (24 elders and 4 living creatures) were supposed to be a nation showing God’s light to the world and bringing in all nations to worship.

The messengers of the churches are angels who blow trumpets because the time is as hand

“Blow the trumpet in Zion sound the alarm on my holy hill.” Joel 2:1

huldah0103FLEE BABYLON – Revelation sets the Bride against the Harlot and the Kingdom of Babylon against the Kingdom of God (New Jerusalem).  Israel got caught up in Babylon. God first cast off Israel at the valley of Megiddo in 609 BCE – when they came under foreign rule – the begining of the curses of Leviticus 26.  They failed  to be the light to the world and the remaining curses came into effect as they were beseiged in Jerusalem and scattered. They remain cast off until they repent at the mountain of Megiddo (Armageddon means ‘Mountain of Megiddo)  The time is at hand – See Daniel 12 – Time of Coming Blessing

In essence, Revelation is saying “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” – these are
God’s judgments –

THE CHURCH 2-3 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. 2:7

EARTH & INHABITANTS: TRUMPETS 8-9 “A huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.”

THOSE IN TEMPLE 11:1 “I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers”

WORSHIPPERS OF BEAST 14:11 “The smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.”

EARTH & INHABITANTS (Who worship Beast) 16 – VIALS “Ugly, festering sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.” 16:2

CITIES OF NATIONS 16:19 “The cities of the nations collapsed

BABYLON THE GREAT –symbol of trade/wealth/Kingdoms of Men including Israel – “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” 18:2

HARLOT – “I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters.” 17:1

BEAST & FALSE PROPHET –  “The beast was captured, and with it the false prophet …The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur” 19:20

SATANHe threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over” 20:2-3

Revelation is the ‘Mene Mene Tekel Parsin’ for the Kingdoms of men. The Writing on the Wall in Babylon was in fact 3 units of weight/money adding to 126

A Mene (Mina) was 50 Babylonian shekelsweighed

A Tekel was 1 shekel

A Parsin was half a Mena – 25 shekels

Mene        50

Mene        50

Tekel          1

Parsin       25

TOTAL     126 Shekels

In Revelation we see a tenfold multiplication of this judgement – 1260 – the time of probation for human history ends.  The Kingdoms of Men are weighed and found wanting.

This period is called 1260 days, or 42 months or 3.5 days or ‘times time and dividing of time’ depending on which aspect of it we are looking at. It’s like trying to understand the writing on the wall – it’s more about God’s message than it is about actual times or actual weights.  It’s also a reminder of the  witness of Jesus which the Jews rejected. Like the rejected 40 day witness of the Promised Land for which they suffered 40 years – the Jews suffer for the rejected 3.5 year witness of Jesus.

God showed Israel and the nations His Son for 3.5 years – they rejected Him

Revelation and Daniel reveal judgments relating to 3.5 years which is another way of saying 42 months, or time, times and half a time, or 1260 days – a reminder of the Jews rejection of Jesus and his murder in the middle of the covenant which Jesus proclaimed (He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’ Dan. 9:27)

3.5 YEARS Witnessing Jesus

After which The Jews and Gentiles killed Him

Acts 4:26 ‘THE KINGS OF THE EARTH took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ. ‘ “For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel’

1260 Days clothed in sackcloth Rev 11:3

42 Months Holy City trampled Rev 11:2 & beast has authority Rev 13:5

3.5 Days of death Rev 11:8 Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city—which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.

Time, times, dividing of time Dan 12:6 “Till when [is] the end of these wonders?… After a time, times, and a half, and at the completion of the breaking in pieces of the power of the holy people”

The Same groups of people can be described with different symbols in Revelation.  Jesus Himself is referred to as the Lamb, the rider of the white horse, one like the son of man, the bright morning star.

The Jews are referred to as the 2 witnesses clothed with sackcloth – a symbol of mourning/affliction/humiliation. They are also the harlot of Rev. 17. Both groups are attacked by the beast which comes out of the abyss – another clue they are one and the same.

The Church is the woman of Revelation 12 clothed with all the lights of heaven – symbols of glory/truth/knowledge, they are also the bride.  The fates of both groups run in parallel.

JUDGEMENT OF THE JEWS                                                JUDGEMENT OF THE CHURCH

2 WITNESSES clothed in sackcloth

Rev 11 – Witness for 1260. Attacked by the beast from the Abyss.

WOMAN clothed with all the lights of heaven (in contrast to sackcloth of 2 witnesses)

Rev 12 – 1260 days in wilderness

HARLOT Rev 17 – Attacked by the beast of the Abyss left naked – burnt with fire BRIDE Rev 19 – Invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb – clothed with bright linen (contrast to the naked witnesses)

Throughout the Bible God uses past events to demonstrate future events.

Often the future event is an expansion of what has gone before – so God expands the number or amount of time connected to it for emphasis. The number may start out as a literal number but become symbolic –

God uses the number 7 for the time to complete the desolation ofNeb Nebuchadnezzar, Jerusalem and Israel –

7 times passed over Nebuchadnezzar until he knew that God Most High rules in the Kingdoms of men 70 years of desolation passed over Jerusalem (Dan 9:2) & surrounding nations (Jer. 25:9)(failed potential after 70yrs) 70 ‘7’s will pass over Israel until they know, & the world knows that GOD RULES (Dan 9:4)

Revelation follows the pattern of numbering and measuring found in Daniel

Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. Rev 13:6 Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of man (humanity). That number is 666…19:20 The beast was captured, and with it the false prophet …The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur”

See 666 – Counting the Number of the Beast

Tekel: You have been weighed/measured/numbered on the scales and found wanting.

Rev 11:1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers.

Rev 20:13 Each person was judged according to what they had done.

Rev 21:15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls

Parsin: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever. Rev 11:15

These parallel judgements  end with the Kingdom and began with the judgement on Israel for turning away from God –

1st Trumpet: 8:7 Fire cast on Earth – 1/3 land burned – Judgement by 1/3s described in Ezek. 5

2nd Trumpet:8:8-9 Sea to blood sea – sea creatures die

3rd Trumpet: 8:10 Rivers & springs – turn bitter – See Jer. 9:15 punishment of bitterness on Israel.

4th Trumpet 8:12 Sun moon stars – turn dark – See Jer. 4:21-23

5th Trumpet 9:1-11 Abyss opened locusts – torment people

6th Trumpet 9:9-13 Four angels released at Euphrates – kill 1/3 mankind

7th Trumpet 11:15-19 Thunder earthquake hail

“The kingdom of the world has become

the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah” 11:15

1st Bowl: 16:2 Land – festering sores. See Deut. 28:7 festering sores on Israel for forsaking covenant.

2nd Bowl: 16:3 Sea to blood –  sea creatures die

3rd Bowl: 16:4 Rivers & springs – blood

4th Bowl: 16:8-9 Sun – people scorched

5th Bowl: 16:10-11 Throne of the beast – darkness agony

6th Bowl:16:12-14 Euphrates dried up – 3 spirits like frogs gather armies

V16 “Behold, I come like a thief!”

7th Bowl: 16:19-21 Thunder earthquake hail

“It is done!” 16:17

The strange beasts and images of Revelation are given meaning by searching out their counterparts in the Old Testament.

In Daniel 3:1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, 60 cubits high and 6 cubits wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. His message was – Worship the image in Babylon (60 x 6) or be killed

In Revelation 13:15 the same decree is issued – “The image (of beast) could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.” – The dimensions of this image were also multiplied (600,60,6) 666 – the time Israel has been under foreign rule – ‘count the number of the beast’  see:  666 – Counting the Number of the Beast

The scarlet beast of Rev. 17 with 7 heads and 10 horns occupies the land of Israel built on 7 nations/mountains (Deut 7:1) surrounded by her 10 Arab neighbours who seek her destruction – the 7 heads are also 7 kingdoms having rule over Israel  – Rev 17:10 see ‘Harlot of Babylon

When the ‘beast’ is complete with its last head (Iran – see Daniel 8 – End Time Prophecy), it comes against Israel (the harlot) a final time – “The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire.” Rev. 17:16 Israel will turn to God for their deliverance (Zech. 12:10) – God will judge ‘the beast’ and destroy its rule forever.

“In the time of those kings (10 toe kings), the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.” Dan 2:44-5

AS WE DRAW near to the last days of the Kingdoms of Men, it is good to search the Scriptures to discover more of God’s wonderful plan with the earth and to be ready – for the Lord will come like a thief in the night to those who are not watching.

Very good explaination of the symbols and numbers in prophecy. Just a couple of points, in your explaination about the number of 126, 1260 and 42 months, did you intend to write time times and half a time = 3.5 days or should that be 3.5 years. Also the number 666 is the weight of gold that Solomon taxed the people. The mark of the beast may relate to taxation or accessing the monetary system.

Thanks for thoughts…I think time, times and dividing of time is reminding us of ‘Mene Mene Tekel Parsin’… so the actual period is not as important as the idea of what’s going on. The wise men of Babylon were trying to make sense of 3 units of weight – the meaning Daniel gave was of judgement. Yes the 666 of Solomon’s time also seems linked to the same idea. I think the monetary system in general is covered more specifically by Rev 18 – Babylon the Kingdoms of Men. The beast is a different specific aspect… for example the beast in some aspects didn’t exist at the time Revelation was written. Rev 17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. I think the beast is the instrument used to punish Israel’the harlot’ etc
